  • ANTISOCIAL SKATEBOARD SHOP attacked by PREDATORY BIRD!!!

If you are ever a pro skater in your 30s, from Aberdeen, Scotland, in the year 2012 then the chances are you’ll find yourself standing in Antisocial Skateshop with a bag of tees your friend has designed for your small-ass, home-grown, aggressive-gull-themed brand. Luckily your friend is none other than the prolific, A1, prime-cut British comic book artist Jon Horner and together over email and sci-fi-style video chat you’ve been developing a laughter plot to take the street wear market by storm!

    What is it?
    It’s street wear!

Which is clothing to wear…in the street.

    Check it out. (more…)

  • The Process is called Marquetry

In November 2012 Dudebarn1, Jake Gascoyne and I headed to Vancouver, in Dudebarn’s fuel efficient car, to see the #prettysweet screening. What my friends didn’t realise is that we were also going there to work. The 2nd and final round of Folk Custom Skateboards produced Predatory Bird-in-Hand-crafted decks were in need of a love injection. Fate had dictated that I was the only one with the appropriate syringe.

    MARQUETRY (mar·que·try)
    Noun:
Inlaid work made from small pieces of variously colored wood or other materials.

We needed to check each cut for imperfections that require sanding with some 220 grit.
    considering
Some need to be finished by hand. Carefully working through score by score with a craft knife gets the job done. (more…)

  • Storytime Part 2

The genteel folks over at Thrasher Magazine have been kind enough to print a short Predatory Bird Comic story each month with the experimental title of… The Predatory Bird.
It’s become a morbid tale and in the first 3 parts there is heavy, unimaginative use of the word fuck.

I’m a grown up, or I appear to be most days, and (more…)

  • There is Another…Predatory…Bird!

Rumour has it that there is another person, who also grew up in the North East of Scotland, who is soon to release a CD containing strange songs and stories. The weird coincidence is that this artist also happens to go by the name Predatory Bird. Now, we are certainly aware that coincidences are rife in this universe but given that this alter-predatory bird is not in any way, shape or form affiliated with this predatory bird, that released the lifestyle promo or sells wonderful tees wheels decks and completes over here, this is all a little intriguing. The communication we received claims that one of the stories is inspired by the following youtube video. (more…)

  • WTF is The Predatory Bird?

The Predatory Bird got started while I was on the narcotic painkiller Oxycodone. In a series of post-surgery visions, the swooping screaming gulls of my childhood shrieked the words “Blaaaaaawwwwwgggg!!! Blaaaawwwwwwgggg!!!”
Since it’s beginnings I’ve found gull culture and skate culture to be more similar than I ever expected and I am no more insane than you are. Both gulls and street skaters are reviled and misunderstood by mainstream society. They’re noisy, they make a mess, they wax ledges, they shit on cars, they terrorize the elderly. Both are compelled beyond their will to do what they do. Both are on an endless search to satisfy some deep primal urge. Gulls feast on food discarded by humans who often think of themselves as above and better than gulls. Skaters feast on (more…)

  • The Lifestyle Promo

In this video we document the skateboarding  lifestyle. It is composed of the type of lifestyle skateboarding we endorse and encourage. All skating is on The Predatory Bird Lifestyle Item, available here.

  • The Wood Crafter

This video is of my friend Andy. When I was 13 I got drunk and threw a pool ball as hard as I could straight at his face. He dodged it, laughed, and introduced me to the R. Crumb/ Neil Blender style keep-on-truckin rock fakie. Now he operates a small wood shop in Vancouver where he has made a miniscule number of the first ever Predatory Bird products. I’m pretty sure this is the only time we will use this particular process. There are 50, some of which are completes with Thunders Deluxe made specially, thankyou Deluxe.

  • Peter Brings the Shadow to Life

Peter Brings the Shadow to Life

The title of this post comes from this essay. If you can’t be bothered to read it that’s fine but if you can then your life will be a little richer; although maybe not in the diamond earring sense of the word. It sums up some of the themes that might possibly be floating around inside the following amazing video by Joe Pease. Let us know in the comments if we’re reading way too much into it and should probably just chill (‘n’ shit).
